Fortunately

I have been feeling pretty positive about the new year so far. Good vibes, etc. It started off well sharing a New Year's Day dinner (Chinese) and movie (Slumdog Millionaire) with friends. At that dinner I enjoyed not one but TWO fortune cookies.

I should note that I LOVE fortune cookies, and I keep every fortune. I have done this for years and years, and amassed quite a collection. A few fortune cookie notes:
  • Fortune cookies have long played a role in my life. The night before my sister started kindergarden (I would have been about three) my parents took us to a Chinese restaurant and my sister's fortune was something like, "An investment in education will pay great dividends." My dad saved that fortune and gave it to my sister, framed, during graduate school. How can you not love a fortune cookie after that?!
  • I deTEST fortunes that are not fortunes at all... "You are wise and insightful." First of all, DUH. ;-) Second, that is NOT A FORTUNE. I want to hear what exciting thing is going to happen to me so that I can, at least for a few seconds, believe it to be true. I don't want to be randomly described by someone in a cookie factory. Please.
  • That being said, my favorite fortune I've ever received is this: "Ask not what your fortune cookie can do for you, but what you can do for your fortune cookie." While it flies in the face of my fortune cookie rules, it IS hilariously funny enough to earn my respect.
  • My friend Kristie and I used to eat what our cafeteria called the Big Rice Bowl (affectionately known as the BRB, before that acronym was co-opted by texters everywhere.) It was truly a magnificent lunch. Basically a huge stirfry made to order with two wontons (which were called wontons but were actually tiny crab rangoons.) And, of course, the fortune cookie. Kristie and I got into the habit of telling each other what our fortunes would be about before we opened them. i.e. Kristie would say, "Your fortune is about that boy you like." I would say, "Your fortune is about your upcoming vacation." Then we would open them and either ooh and ahh about the applicability of our fortunes to said situations, or we would laugh at how completely they didn't jive with said situations, or we would rant for days about getting a fortune that really wasn't a fortune. It was great fun. Then we changed food service providers, and the BRB was no longer. Whenever Kristie or I bring up the BRB we both sigh in a very nostalgic/melancholy way and shake our heads like 80-year-olds remembering penny candy. RIP, BRB.
So, back to New Year's Day 2009. I ate two fortune cookies, and I'm counting the first fortune as truly "mine," since assuming more than one fortune is applicable to you is just pure greediness. Before I opened the cookie I thought to myself, "This fortune will be about 2009." Here's what it said:
"You will bring sunshine into someone's life."
I think that's a great fortune. I certainly hope I do. And I hope a few people out there bring a little sunshine my way, as well. I'm feeling it's likely. Like I said, good vibes.

And by the way... Slumdog Millionaire? GREAT movie. Run, don't walk, to see it.
